Tesco Cancels Credit Cards after Fraud Alert

Tesco Bank has cancelled some of its customers’ credit cards after concerns were raised that a number of accounts may have been compromised. Affected customers will receive new credit cards but may have to wait up to a week for the replacements to arrive.

In the meantime, customers whose accounts have been affected have been told via text that they will no longer be able to use their cards. The bank said that of its three million credit card users, only a small minority would be affected, and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

A spokesperson for Tesco said:

"We take the security of our customers' accounts very seriously and take every measure possible to protect customers from fraudulent activity. As a result of routine industry-wide fraud protection measures, we have reissued a number of credit cards as a precautionary measure."

This is not the first time the bank has suffered a major security breach. In 2016 it suffered a large-scale attack on some of its customers’ current accounts, leading to 20,000 individuals requiring refunds.
