Mother tragically killed on golf course by van fleeing police
Suzanne Cherry, a 62-year-old mother of three, was tragically killed by a van while playing golf. Mrs Cherry was struck on April 11 as the van driver was being pursued by police through Aston Wood Golf Club in Birmingham. She had been playing with her husband, Clinton, when the accident occurred, and she succumbed to her injuries on the Tuesday.
West Midlands Police have arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of murder, while a 22-year-old man was taken into custody on charges of manslaughter and assisting an offender. A 41-year-old man is also being held on suspicion of the same charges. All three are being questioned in Staffordshire.
The police are still searching for an individual seen fleeing the scene on foot. The pursuit began as police officers in two patrol cars chased the van before it entered the 18-hole championship course in Blake Street, Sutton Coldfield. CCTV footage obtained by a national newspaper shows the van driving onto the course, pursued by the police cars.
Staffordshire Police are working alongside West Midlands Police to locate the man who fled the scene, which lies near the border of Staffordshire and Sutton Coldfield. A police spokesperson stated, “We are piecing together his movements after the collision, speaking to witnesses, and reviewing the footage we’ve gathered.”
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the actions of West Midlands Police. The IOPC confirmed that officers had initially begun following the van in Kingstanding, Birmingham, after receiving reports of suspicious activity.
